4/26/2020 Journal Entry

I’ve told myself I want to document my beautiful boy’s life journey more, so I am committing myself towards deeper reflections.

Little Edwin is growing so much! After a month of speech therapy, his language has bursted into understandable and frequent word-development! We have been doing speech therapy remotely, but I already knew he was going to have a leap in his language skills. I do not think the speech therapy made much difference, but Rachel and Katy’s advice has been useful.

Yesterday Edwin ran around the bedrooms screaming and cackling hysterically. It was so cute. He is so excited to be alive and to communicate and play games with us! He found a new hiding spot in our Hide and Seek play, behind the crib in the dark. He’s not afraid of the dark. He’s not afraid of much, but I did convince him not to play with the printer when he turned it on a week ago and it started searching for paper. I told him it could eat his hand and he backed away very cautiously! David tried not to laugh but failed. It was hilarious.

He’s stopped laying on my entire stomach and chest after nursing or before his nap. He did it for 4 months and now he’s got new teeth coming in and new words coming in and doesn’t want to cuddle or nurse! There’s too much going on in his brilliant mind. He lays in his crib for an hour before bed practicing his vocabulary. He woke up this morning and ran to the back door to go out, which he had never done before. For a while he was going into Dada’s room to greet him. Now he says “Dada” but goes to other rooms to play.

He loves playing with his alphabet flash cards. He doesn’t play with them as expected, of course. He enjoys putting them in the box and then taking them out again. He’s very coordinated. He ran around the house with his dinosaur suitcase that I bought him right at the start of the pandemic. It was the last time he went to a store with me, and it was the last time I went to a large grocery store. We only do curbside now. Grocery shopping was a fun experience for us, but there is no way Edwin would wear a mask. We are currently limited to going for nature walks, but since they closed the river and any city parks, everyone is congregating in the same locations. There are two church parks I am heavily considering wiping down with bleach and letting him have at it. One is secluded but far away and bigger, while the other one is just down the street but more noticeable and possibly more likely to have other children playing on it, though I have only seen children play on it maybe twice since living here.

David and I are enjoying watching the show Lucifer. It’s really good! We watch it during Edwin’s naps and in the evenings, although we actually declined and went to bed early yesterday. I didn’t have any VIPKid classes and have lost two students. Now all that’s left is the one, Alfred. All teachers are home and available to teach, so there is too many teachers and not enough demand. I’m about ready to give up until things go back to normal. There are far too many variables at play making the reward that comes from persistency and hard work nonexistent.

Edwin points to my eyes, ears, and arms and says their names now. He loves words like ‘hour’ and ‘brother,’ and phrases like, “oh no!” Which he cutely said as David caught him while we were calling my dad last night. He said, “No! Oh noooo!” He is too cute! He tricks me by pointing to wrong locations when I ask him to find things on the pages in his books. He does the wheels on the bus movements with his hands and arms if he sees wheelbarrows in his books or other obvious wheels. He still makes a diamond with his hands if I sing Twinkle, Twinkle, and he’ll do the twinkle part if I remind him, and he tries to sing the abcs with me. He loves saying the letter ‘E.’ I’ve had a lot of fun stacking blocks and making castles/pyramids with him. He knocks them down before I finish, usually. We play Godzilla now. I showed him a 1978 YouTube video with Godzilla and we stacked Tupperware containers and destroyed them for fun the other day. He’s such a fun child.

He loves buckling himself into his infant car seat in the laundry room. He’s found out how to unbuckle the top part but hasn’t figured out how to unbuckle the bottom. He also buckled the seatbelts in my car. He got so excited when I showed him he can unbuckle the car seatbelts all on his own! I’m so grateful to have all of this time with my baby. I’m so lucky! He is the perfect child for me. He likes all that I like. We’re so similar! We laugh at things together- genuine laughs- and he’s only just turned two! I can’t wait to laugh with him more as he develops more language.

I’ll be posting an update on his language and play skills every couple of days. I don’t want to forget this beautiful time with my amazing child. I tell myself I won’t forget some details, but then I do :( I know I’ll love looking back at these journals one day.
